Chengal sawn timber Singapore

Chengal is widely regarded as the most durable hardwood timber available in Singapore. It is the first-choice specification for premium outdoor decking, marine structures, bridges and long-service-life outdoor applications — and for good reason. Chengal's Durability Class 1 rating means it naturally resists decay, moisture, fungi and insects without chemical treatment, outperforming every other timber species commonly available in Singapore in outdoor longevity.

This guide covers everything you need to know about Chengal timber in Singapore — its technical properties, what it looks like, where it performs best, how it compares to Balau, what it costs and where to buy it.

What Is Chengal Timber?

Chengal (Neobalanocarpus heimii) is a tropical hardwood native to Peninsular Malaysia and southern Thailand, belonging to the Dipterocarpaceae family. It grows slowly in lowland and hill dipterocarp forests, and its slow growth is precisely why it is so dense and durable — the tree's tight grain structure builds up over decades, creating a timber that is extraordinarily hard and resistant to the biological and environmental forces that degrade other species.

Freshly cut Chengal timber has a pale yellow-brown heartwood that deepens to a rich reddish-brown with age and outdoor exposure. The grain is typically interlocked to straight, giving the timber a subtle ribbon figure on quartersawn faces. It is naturally resinous — a characteristic that contributes to its moisture and decay resistance but requires care during finishing and gluing.

In Singapore's construction and marine industries, Chengal has been the premium timber specification for outdoor and structural applications for decades. Architects, engineers and contractors specify it by name when they need a timber that will last — not just perform adequately, but genuinely outlast the project it was built for.

Why Chengal Is Rated Durability Class 1

Durability Class 1 is the highest natural durability rating under BS EN 350 — it means the timber has very high natural resistance to biological degradation under outdoor conditions. Not many timbers achieve this. Of the five species Plony Industries supplies in Singapore, Chengal is the only one rated Class 1.

The Class 1 rating comes from Chengal's unique combination of:

•        High natural resin content — the resinous heartwood is inhospitable to fungal growth and insect activity

•        Extremely dense cell structure — moisture penetrates slowly even at cut surfaces and edges

•        Natural extractives — chemical compounds in the heartwood provide biological resistance without external treatment

•        High density — the tight grain leaves minimal void space for water and organisms to establish

What Class 1 means in practice for Singapore's climate: In Singapore's year-round heat and humidity — averaging 80–85% relative humidity — timber that is not naturally durable or chemically treated will decay within a few years. Chengal at Durability Class 1 is exceptional in this environment. It can be installed outdoors without chemical treatment and will outlast lower-durability treated timbers in direct comparisons.

Chengal vs Balau — Which Should You Choose?

The most common specification decision for contractors and project teams in Singapore is between Chengal and Balau. Both are premium tropical hardwoods with high natural durability — but they occupy different positions in the market. The comparison below covers the key decision factors:

When to Specify Chengal Over Balau

•       The project requires maximum outdoor longevity without treatment — long-span bridges, permanent outdoor structures

•        Marine or waterfront applications where natural resistance to marine organisms is critical

•        Premium outdoor decking where the extended service life justifies the higher upfront cost

•        Projects where replacing or maintaining the timber is difficult or costly — e.g. elevated walkways, jetties

•        Specifications that require Durability Class 1 by name

When Balau Is the More Practical Choice

•        Structural construction applications where Balau's slightly higher density range provides adequate strength

•        Budget-sensitive projects where Chengal's premium is not justifiable for the application

•        General outdoor construction where CCA-treated Balau provides sufficient outdoor performance

•        Boat building and marine fabrication where Balau is the traditional and well-proven specification

Working with Chengal Timber — Practical Notes

Cutting and Machining

Chengal's high density and interlocked grain mean it blunts cutting tools faster than Kapur or Keruing. Use sharp carbide-tipped blades and router bits and replace or sharpen them more frequently than with softer species. Pre-drilling is recommended before nailing or screwing to prevent splitting.

Finishing and Coating

Chengal's resin content requires specific handling for finishing. Before applying varnish, oil or paint, wipe down all surfaces with a suitable solvent (such as white spirit) to remove surface resin. Allow cut timber to air for at least 48 hours before finishing. Water-based finishes are generally more compatible with resinous timbers than oil-based alternatives.

For outdoor decking, many specifiers choose to leave Chengal uncoated — it weathers naturally to a silver-grey patina over time. Regular cleaning with a deck cleaner preserves the surface and slows the greying process. Alternatively, a penetrating hardwood oil (suitable for resinous timbers) can maintain the natural reddish-brown colour.

Gluing

The resin content in Chengal can interfere with adhesive bond strength. For structural gluing, clean the mating surfaces thoroughly with solvent before applying adhesive and select an adhesive system tested for use with resinous timbers. Consult your adhesive supplier if gluing is a structural requirement.

Screws and Fasteners

Use stainless steel or hot-dip galvanised fasteners for outdoor Chengal applications. Standard mild steel screws and nails will rust in Singapore's outdoor humidity and create unsightly staining in the timber, particularly with Chengal's resinous surface.

Chengal Timber Price in Singapore — What to Expect

Chengal commands the highest price of the tropical hardwood species available in Singapore — typically 30–50% higher than Balau for equivalent cross-sections. This reflects its limited supply (it is a slow-growing, regulated species) and its premium durability performance.

Pricing in Singapore is influenced by:

•        Cross-section and length — larger sections and custom cut-to-size carry higher unit costs

•        Treatment — untreated Chengal is lower cost; LONZA TANALITH CCA or DRICON fire retardant treatment adds cost but extends service life further

•        Surface finish — sawn (rough) is most economical; planed smooth is higher cost

•        Quantity — larger project orders typically attract better pricing

•        Market conditions — Chengal supply is constrained by sustainable harvesting regulations in Malaysia

The correct way to evaluate Chengal's cost is on a lifetime basis, not unit price. A Chengal deck installed today at 30% premium over Balau, lasting 20+ years without treatment or replacement, costs significantly less over its service life than a Balau deck requiring preservative treatment and replacement at 10–12 years. For permanent outdoor structures in Singapore, Chengal's total cost of ownership is frequently lower than cheaper alternatives.

Does Chengal Need Chemical Treatment?

For most outdoor applications in Singapore, untreated Chengal is sufficient — its Class 1 natural durability provides 15–25+ years of outdoor service life without chemical treatment. This is one of Chengal's most significant advantages over other species.

Chemical treatment is worth considering in two specific situations:

•        Ground contact or immersed conditions — where the timber is in direct ground contact or permanently submerged, even Chengal can benefit from TANALITH CCA treatment to push service life beyond 30 years

•        SCDF fire safety compliance — for applications in commercial, institutional or high-rise residential projects where SCDF fire codes require fire retardant timber, DRICON fire retardant treatment is required regardless of species

Plony Industries is an authorised LONZA treatment provider — both TANALITH CCA preservative treatment and DRICON fire retardant treatment are available.

Frequently Asked Questions — Chengal Timber Singapore

What is the durability class of Chengal timber?

Chengal is rated Durability Class 1 under BS EN 350 — the highest natural durability classification. It has very high natural resistance to decay, fungi, insects and moisture, making it suitable for outdoor and marine applications in Singapore without chemical treatment.

How long does Chengal timber last outdoors in Singapore?

Untreated Chengal typically lasts 15–25 years or more in Singapore's outdoor tropical conditions. With LONZA TANALITH CCA chemical treatment, service life extends to 25–40+ years. Regular maintenance (cleaning and recoating if finished) further extends the lifespan.

What is the difference between Chengal and Balau timber?

Chengal (Durability Class 1) has higher natural durability and longer outdoor service life than Balau (Class 1–2). Balau is slightly denser at the upper end but requires preservative treatment for outdoor use. Chengal costs 30–50% more than Balau but typically has lower lifetime cost for permanent outdoor structures. Balau is more widely available and cost-effective for structural and budget-sensitive applications.

Does Chengal timber need to be treated before outdoor use?

No — Chengal's Class 1 natural durability means it can be used outdoors in Singapore without chemical treatment. Treatment is optional to further extend service life or required only where SCDF fire safety codes mandate fire retardant timber.

What sizes of Chengal timber are available in Singapore?

Plony Industries supplies Chengal sawn timber in cross-sections from 25×25mm to 200×200mm and lengths from 1m to 6m. Cut-to-size and custom dimensions are available through our in-house cutting facility. Planed finish is also available.

Is Chengal timber suitable for outdoor decking in Singapore?

Yes — Chengal is the top specification for outdoor decking in Singapore. Its Class 1 natural durability makes it naturally resistant to Singapore's humidity, rainfall and biological hazards without treatment. It weathers to a natural silver-grey if left uncoated, or maintains its reddish-brown colour with hardwood oil maintenance.

Why is Chengal timber expensive?

Chengal is a slow-growing species native to Peninsular Malaysia, subject to sustainable harvesting regulations that limit supply. Its premium price reflects both its scarcity and its exceptional performance — it is the most durable hardwood available in Singapore and the only species rated Durability Class 1.
