Industrial equipment and machinery in operation will undergo wear, which is a gradual degradation resulting from material loss due to extended or excessive use. In heavy industries, it is a standard practice to utilize wear plates, chocky bars, and wear buttons to shield equipment from abrasion, impact, and wear. This approach helps prolong the machinery's lifespan, decrease downtime, and lower maintenance expenses.

Composite wear plates consist of a construction steel base plate that is hardfaced with various chromium and complex carbide-based cored welding consumables. A chocky bar is a modular, rectangular, or block-like composite wear part, made of white iron attached to a mild steel backing. A wear button is a small, round, durable insert (often made of chrome carbide or white iron) used for spot protection. These wear protection components are available in various shapes and sizes and are frequently utilized in different wear protection applications. Often, they are combined on the industrial equipment undergoing the abrasion to provide the necessary wear protection.

Component

Best For

Installation

Key Benefits

Wear Plates

Flat surface protection

Weld or Bolt On

Broad coverage, easy replacement, custom shapes possible

Chocky Bars

Irregular or curved surfaces, impact zones

Weldable, Shapeable

Flexible fit, easy to cut and shape, high toughness

Wear Buttons

Spot protection on curves and edges

Weld On

Targeted and localized areas, minimal weight

Using all three wear protection component together ensures:

  • Comprehensive protection across all equipment surfaces.

  • Cost efficiency: Only replace what’s worn (targeted reinforcement).

  • Less downtime: Reduced frequency of repairs and unplanned shutdowns.

At Plony Industries, we maintain an inventory of different wear plates, chocky bars, and wear buttons. Our engineer will assess the wear application and suggest the most appropriate wear protection solution. In combination with the hardfacing welding filler metals we supply, we can offer the most cost-effective wear protection solutions for your needs. Contact our engineer for a technical review.
