Balau Timber Singapore — Complete Guide to Properties, Applications and Pricing

Balau is Singapore's most widely used structural hardwood timber — and for good reason. It combines the high density, strength and natural durability that construction, marine and outdoor applications demand, with greater availability and a more accessible price point than Chengal. For contractors, builders and project teams in Singapore who need a timber that performs in demanding outdoor and structural conditions without Chengal's premium price, Balau is almost always the answer.
This guide covers everything you need to know about Balau timber in Singapore — its technical properties, appearance, where it performs best, how it compares to Chengal, what treatment is recommended, what it costs and where to buy it.
What Is Balau Timber?
Balau is a genus of tropical hardwood (Shorea spp., Heavy Hardwood group) native to Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, belonging to the Dipterocarpaceae family — the same botanical family as Chengal and Kapur. Multiple species are commercially sold under the Balau name in Singapore, most commonly Yellow Balau (Shorea faguetiana) and Red Balau (Shorea resinosa). The timber is also known as Bangkirai in Indonesia and Selangan Batu in parts of Malaysia.
Balau heartwood is yellow to medium brown when freshly cut, deepening to a rich dark brown on prolonged outdoor exposure. The grain is moderately fine to coarse and typically interlocked — producing a subtle stripe figure on quartersawn faces. Resin pockets may be present in some pieces. Yellow Balau is lighter in colour with a more consistent appearance; Red Balau is darker with a more pronounced reddish-brown tone.
In Singapore's construction, marine and infrastructure sectors, Balau has been the standard structural hardwood specification for heavy construction, decking and marine fabrication for decades. It is routinely specified by contractors, engineers and project teams alongside or in place of Chengal, depending on performance requirements and budget.

Yellow Balau vs Red Balau — What Is the Difference?
In Singapore's timber market, Balau is most commonly supplied as Yellow Balau — the lighter-coloured, more widely available commercial grade. Red Balau typically has a more consistent reddish-brown colour. For structural applications, both perform equivalently — the choice is often based on colour preference for visible applications such as outdoor decking. Key differences:
• Yellow Balau — lighter yellow-brown colour; more commonly stocked in Singapore; widely used for structural, decking and marine applications
• Red Balau — richer reddish-brown colour; preferred for visible outdoor decking applications where a warmer tone is desired
• For structural, hidden or treated applications — Yellow or Red Balau perform equivalently and the distinction is irrelevant
When ordering from Plony Industries, advise your preference if colour consistency is important for your application. For structural use, we supply the most readily available grade.
Balau vs Chengal — Which Should You Choose?
The most common specification decision in Singapore is between Balau and Chengal. Both are Class 1–2 tropical hardwoods with high natural durability — but they serve different positions in the market. Here is a direct comparison:
Factor | Balau | Chengal |

Cost | $$$ | $$$$ |
Best for | Heavy structural construction, boat building, outdoor decking and marine use where budget is a key consideration. Excellent value for outdoor performance. | Premium outdoor decking, bridges, long-life marine structures and applications where absolute maximum natural durability is specified. |
When to Specify Balau Over Chengal
• Heavy structural construction where maximum load-bearing strength is the primary requirement — Balau's density range at the upper end matches or exceeds Chengal
• Boat building and marine fabrication — Balau is the traditional and well-proven specification for vessel construction in the region
• Budget-sensitive outdoor projects where CCA-treated Balau provides sufficient outdoor performance at lower cost than Chengal
• Projects where wider availability and faster supply are important — Balau is more readily available in Singapore than Chengal
• Infrastructure and public works projects where the specification calls for a Class 1–2 hardwood rather than specifically Chengal
When Chengal Is the Better Choice
• Premium outdoor decking where maximum natural service life without treatment is specified
• Long-life marine structures where absolute highest natural durability to moisture and organisms is critical
• Projects where Durability Class 1 is specifically required by the engineering specification
• Applications where replacing or maintaining the timber after installation is difficult or costly

Balau Timber Applications in Singapore
Application | Balau Suitability | Why |
Heavy structural construction and beams | Excellent ✅ | Very high density (800–1,100 kg/m³) and bending strength ~130–160 MPa. One of the strongest structural hardwoods available in Singapore. |
Outdoor decking and walkways | Excellent ✅ | High natural durability; CCA treatment recommended for outdoor use. Widely used for residential, commercial and public decking in Singapore. |
Boat building and marine frames | Excellent ✅ | Traditional specification for boat building in Southeast Asia. High density and strength with good marine moisture resistance. |
Bridges and infrastructure | Excellent ✅ | High load-bearing capacity and outdoor durability for long-service-life structural applications. LTA and infrastructure project specified species. |
Marine and waterfront structures | Very good ✅ | Good marine moisture resistance. CCA treatment recommended for immersed or splash zone applications. |
Flooring and industrial flooring | Good ✅ | High hardness and density make Balau extremely wear-resistant for high-traffic flooring applications including vehicular workshop floors. |
Formwork and shuttering | Over-specified ⚠️ | Balau's strength and durability are not required for temporary formwork. Use Kapur or Keruing for more cost-effective formwork applications. |
Interior furniture and cabinetry | Over-specified ⚠️ | Balau's weight and hardness make it difficult to work with for fine furniture. Use Khaya (African Mahogany) for interior decorative work. |
Does Balau Need Chemical Treatment?
Balau is naturally durable at Durability Class 1–2 — it can be used outdoors without treatment, but chemical treatment significantly extends service life and is strongly recommended for most outdoor applications in Singapore.
When Treatment Is Recommended
• Outdoor decking and walkways — CCA preservative treatment extends service life from 7–15 years untreated to 15–25+ years treated. Strongly recommended for all outdoor decking applications in Singapore's humid climate.
• Marine and waterfront structures — Balau in splash zones, tidal areas and immersed conditions benefits significantly from CCA treatment to maximise service life.
• Ground contact applications — any Balau in direct ground contact requires pressure treatment. Untreated Balau should not be used in ground contact.
• Structural applications with SCDF fire safety requirements — DRICON fire retardant treatment is available for commercial, institutional and high-rise applications where SCDF fire codes require fire-rated timber.
When Untreated Balau Is Acceptable
• Interior structural applications — Balau used in dry interior conditions does not require chemical treatment
• Temporary structures and formwork — short-life applications do not justify the cost of treatment (though Kapur or Keruing would be more cost-effective for formwork)
• Applications where the project specification calls for untreated timber and relies on natural durability
Plony Industries is an authorised LONZA chemical treatment provider — both TANALITH CCA preservative treatment and DRICON fire retardant treatment are available at our in-house facility at TimMac@Kranji. CNC cut Balau components can also be treated after cutting.
Working with Balau Timber — Practical Notes
Cutting and Machining
Balau's high density and interlocked grain mean it blunts cutting tools faster than softer species. Use sharp carbide-tipped blades and replace or sharpen them regularly. Some Balau species contain small amounts of silica which accelerates tool wear — keep blades sharp and reduce feed speed when machining.
Resin pockets in some pieces can cause resin build-up on saw blades and router bits — clean blades regularly with solvent. Resin does not affect structural performance.
Nailing and Fastening
Pre-drilling is strongly advisable before nailing Balau — the high density makes driving nails without pre-drilling very difficult and risks splitting the timber, particularly near ends and edges. Use stainless steel or hot-dip galvanised fasteners for all outdoor applications — mild steel corrodes rapidly in Singapore's outdoor humidity and creates staining in the timber.
Gluing
Gluing results with Balau are variable — the dense grain structure and potential resin content can interfere with adhesive bonds. For structural gluing applications, clean mating surfaces with solvent before applying adhesive, use an adhesive system suitable for dense hardwood, and follow the manufacturer's clamping and cure time recommendations. Consult your adhesive supplier for structural gluing requirements.
Finishing and Coating
Balau accepts stains, oils and varnishes well — better than Chengal due to lower resin content in most species. For outdoor decking, a penetrating hardwood oil applied annually maintains the natural brown colour and slows the weathering to silver-grey. For a natural weathered look, Balau can be left uncoated — it weathers to a consistent silver-grey over time, similar to other tropical hardwoods.
Balau Timber Price in Singapore — What to Expect
Balau is priced below Chengal but above Kapur and Keruing — positioning it as the premium-value structural hardwood in Singapore's market. It offers performance approaching Chengal at a meaningfully lower cost, making it the most widely specified structural hardwood in Singapore across construction, marine and infrastructure projects.
Pricing is influenced by:
• Cross-section and length — larger sections and custom cut-to-size carry higher unit costs
• Treatment — untreated Balau is lower cost; CCA or fire retardant treatment adds cost but is typically included in the lifetime cost analysis
• Surface finish — sawn (rough) is most economical; planed smooth adds cost but is necessary for decking and visible members
• Quantity — larger project orders typically attract better pricing
